Tigers Rugby Football Club high school boys team traveled to play the Grand Junction Griffins in a Rugby Colorado league match on April 2nd. The Tigers dominated the first half with 75% time of possession as the bigger “forward” players carried the ball much of the way. The hosting Grand Junction Griffins opened a 10 point lead with stellar back play and impressive discipline.
Tigers drove back to a 10-5 tally at halftime. In the second, the half Tigers answered the Griffins tries with two of their own. Kevin Griebel (Standley Lake HS) converted with the point after kicks, yet the Tigers fell by the score of 27 to 19. Tigers Rugby represents Arvada, Broomfield and Westminster players from Pomona, Holy Family, Standley Lake, Ralston Valley, Broomfield and Legacy High Schools.
The HS Boys host Monarch High School on Saturday, April 9th at Oakhurst Park two in Westminster (9255 Ammons Way, Westminster, CO, 80021). Progressing skills are evident among the Tigers Rugby players including Seamus O’Connell (Arvada West), Michael Sullivan (Drake Middle School), Ben and Simon Anderson, Zachary Dietrich and Joe Boselli, (Holy Family), Liam O’Connor (Legacy HS), Connor Best, Jack Keys, Conrad Grimm, Tanner Pastore, Carson Hunt, Ethan Vowles, (Ralston Valley), Caesar Gutierrez, Cory Stanek, Leif Samson, Michael Kerr, Kevin Griebel, (Standley Lake) Dylan Penland and Samuel Rodriguez (Pomona) and Angel Gallegos (Broomfield) the Tigers play for 4 more league games (Moarch, Cherry Creek, Northside and Wheat Ridge), and playoffs begin in May. Head Coach Matt O’Brian’s staff, including Sean May, Mark Chauncey, Sam Glynn and Ed Madigan have renewed the local club’s historic pride and performance.
Youth Rugby in Arvada!
Boys and Girls ages 10 – 14 are invited to join us for the second year of Tigers Youth Rugby, under Jason Robinson and John Sullivan. TRY League rugby starts on April 5th here in Arvada and is open to all. Rugby is the 2nd most popular sport in the world and a growing sport in the US. Come play rugby 7’s with Tigers Youth Rugby right here in Arvada.
