Chaparral HS Wolverines took on Tigers Rugby Football Club at the Broomfield County Commons Park on April 13th. The Tigers moved to 2-3 in Rugby Colorado Division I play with the win, while Chaparral fell to o-5 after a 94-7 loss. Tigers Rugby decked out our pitch of the last seven years (Championship Field) for the 11 graduating Seniors.
Nick Allen, Jake Boselli, Michael Bowman, Jake Gossman, Jimmy Higdon, Andrew Hutchinson, Peter Loving, Rob Nees, Patrick O’Connor, Anthony “AJ” Shannon, Jonathan Thomas and Warren Wood played a league match for the last time at home as a HS side.
The Tigers desperately needed a win to improve their seed in the coming playoffs. Tigers Rugby knocked the ball around to start the match, but Tigers’ captain, Warren Wood, battled through to get Tigers on the board first. Alec Walters converted 3 of 6 tries, while Warren was 1 of 2. Scoring multiple tries in the 5th league match of the season were: Andrew Hutchinson (3), Jimmy Higdon (3), Jake Boselli (2), and Jonathan Thomas (2).
It was Boselli’s pop kick, cover and dash that gave the Tigers the margin that held up. After Jake put the Tigers up 12-0, a poached pass by the big inside center from Chaparrral put the Tigers back to 12-7 .
A number of one try efforts came as a result of exciting back line play and penalties set up by commitment to the rucks and mauls. Better endurace was evident in the last league match of the season at Broomfield County Commons Park for the Tigers. AJ Shannon, Devin Weeks, Nick Allen, and Warren Wood each had their glimpse of greatness on the rugby pitch with a 5 point try to their credit.
