Tigers Rugby Football Club enjoyed a wonderful day on the best pitch in the nation Saturday (3/6/2010), but fell to a tough and opportunistic Boulder Lions RFC, 27-15. The Tigers B side also dropped a 12-0 decision. Both teams showed better organization in their second periods. The sunny blue skies and the mountain backdrops were a great way to spend a day, win or lose. Boulder Lions are a rapidly improving Division II club that had never beaten a Tigers Rugby A-side in our seven year history. Three cheers go out to Boulder Coaches John Barkmeier, and Jim Bruce for their supportive development of a program with consistently enormous potential. Tigers and Boulder have enjoyed a long divisional rivalry which was well bolstered with this meeting.

Albert Whitemore and Warren Wood took the helm with a variety of back line and back row combinations. Boulder put up 12 points in the first half and were equal to the Tigers with 15 apiece in the second. Tigers Rugby Football Club stepped into uncharted territory with a 29-7 victory of Cherry Creek HS Rugby Club. A perennial powerhouse, the Bruins were upstaged by the aggressive Tigers Rugby lineout defense, ball movement by their backs, tight five, back row and scrum half play. Albert Whitemore took a game ball home as “Man of the Match” for his effort in playing advantages repeatedly, and putting intense pressure on the Cherry Creek playmakers. The Tigers improved their Division I league record to 2-0. The overall club record progressed to 4-3-1.

Tigers Freshmen and Sophomores joined forces with Northside Vikings for the season. Alec Walters led the Tigers/Viking alliance in to battle against Regis Jesuit first, failing in a late comeback attempt, by a score of 20-12. Against East HS, the Tigers showed significant control and rapidly improving ball movement, pressuring the Angels with more than the 17-5 score implies. Nick Dorwart, Walker Prieb, Michael Figundo, Robert Kaniecki, Charlie Ellwood, Danny Fiorino, Luke Rockwood, Braden Thunell, Ryan Rockwood, and Mitchell Thunell combined with 5 Northside underclassmen to learn the game together through the spring. Tigers Rugby inherited a home match at the last minute and capitalized on other opportunities to top the former State Champions, SWARM RFC today by a 22-14 score. The Colorado Youth Rugby league match was originally scheduled for Rooney Sports Complex along C-470, which was closed by snow.

Twenty miles further north, and 2 hours earlier than originally scheduled, the Southwest Area Rugby Men scored first, executing penalties, effectively kicking, and controlling the early lineouts.

Tigers Captain and scrum-half Albert Whitemore created enormous pressure on the retreating Columbine and Chatfield HS students, as he tapped and advanced repeated SWARM penalties. He was awarded an eventual penalty try.

Jimmy Higden showed his breakaway speed again, as he one handed a Swarm knock-on about one foot off the ground, and never breaking stride, weaved his way for a 70 meter try from the right wing.

Patrick O’Connor rambled with the ball a number of times, but finally hit paydirt straight up the middle to put the Tigers ahead 22-14. Tremendous backline movement on the last play of the match fell short on a Tigers goal line knock-on, but showed the progress that had been made in the past week.

Tigers Rugby Football Club met traditional cross-town rivals, Northside Vikings on a snowy Championship Field in Broomfield County Commons Park on Wednesday February 24, 2010. Northside, with a powerful back row, and smart playmakers, picked up the opening kickoff and ran the ball out the end line. Taking the advantage of a number of dropped balls in the icy conditions, the Tigers regrouped. Scrums became a series of 8-man and scrumhalf takes. Off loading by first Daniel Sargeant, and then Patrick O’Connor set up multiple phases of play. Pressure and continuity was on display as over 30 Tigers Rugby players saw action. After 4 days of competition, the Tigers Rugby club has a amassed a 3-1-1 record.

Albert Whitemore opened the scoring after kicking and persistent Tigers rucking pinned the Vikings deep, and prompted a penalty. Whitemore tapped and scored a try, then converted the attempt (1 for 4), to make the score 7-0 after 10 minutes of play. Matt Mclean returned to Tigers Rugby with his Zulu try (first ever) on a decisive 20 meter dash straight up the pitch, and the score was 12-0. Whitemore Captains First Match of the Season

Tigers Rugby Football Club opened the 2010 season against the State Champion Denver East HS Angels on a snowy East HS field. The East A side dominated the Tigers 22-0 with quick, and ultimately lethal backline players that reset like a whip, overloading the Tigers repeatedly. Tigers Rugby Captains Albert Whitemore and Patrick O’Connor led the powerful pack including Early College HS’s Daniel Sargeant; Jake Gossman, Walker Prieb, Jake Boselli, Oliver Smith, Sam Quinn, Matt McLean, and Rob Nees from Holy Family HS, and Andrew Hutchinson and Jared Riemer of Standley Lake HS.

Pomona HS’s 5-A Runner-up Football players, Warren Wood, Daijon Tyler Jimmy Higden, AJ Shannon; Ralston Valley HS’s Ryan Rockwood; Holy Family’s Alec Walters and Anthony Puglise; and Zach Underwood of Standley Lake HS regrouped to tie the potent East HS B side by a score of 5-5 on a try by AJ Shannon.

Tigers Rugby is actively recruiting 13-18 year old boys. Size, strength and speed are abundant in the rugby recruits seen since practice began in December for the spring season, but there is plenty of room for everyone in this club. Tigers Rugby Football Club begins our 7th campaign, with Arvada, Westminster and Broomfield high school (U-19 and U-16) players, and an adult team. The high school age boys rugby club competes in Colorado Youth Rugby, one of the country’s most successful State Based Model Organizations. Adults (U-23 & Alumni Social Side) also play under the auspices of the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union, Western RFU, and USA Rugby.

We anticipate the forthcoming season as a Colorado Youth Rugby Division I team with veterans Patrick O’Connor, Albert Whitemore, Jake Gossman, Alec Walters, Walker Prieb, Jake Boselli, Oliver Smith, Sam Quinn and Rob Nees from Holy Family HS. From Pomona HS, Warren Wood, Daijon Tyler and Nick Allen also return to the Tigers backline support. Ralston Valley HS returns Luke & Ryan Rockwood, Mitchell and Braden Thunell; and Daniel Sargeant brings his skills back from Early College HS. In preseason workouts, the Tigers have seen 34 players report already. Markus Harvey represents a broad base of unique life interests. Markus was a decorated student athlete at Holy Family High School, an All State Honorable Mention as a football player, and a member of the 2005 2A State Championship Football team. Harvey has also dabbled in business, since the age of 14, with the web site ToxicSports.com. He is currently a Freshman student-athlete at Western State College of Colorado.

As a four year starter with Tigers Rugby Football Club, Markus scored more tries than any other player in our history and was a two time Best Forward award winner. He led Tigers Rugby Football Club as a two year captain and ranks second on the Tigers’ all time scoring list, behind another legend, fly half and place kicker, Sam Glynn.

What have you learned from being involved in athletics at Western State?

Invictus (also known as The Human Factor) is an upcoming 2009 feature film based on Nelson Mandela’s life during the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film stars Morgan Freeman as the then South African President Mandela, and Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar, the South African team captain^. The story is based on the John Carlin book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Changed a Nation. The film is due for release on December 11, 2009, and is already considered a “front-runner” for several Academy Awards.

A penalty kick by Sam Glynn won the USA Rugby Division III Collegiate Rugby Regional Championship match today (October 18) in Eagan, Minnesota, by a 3-0 score over Viterbo University from La Crosse Wisconsin.

Blue Ox Rugby is a team of the University of St. Thomas students in St. Paul Minnesota. Tigers Rugby respectfully offers our hearty congratulations to Sammy on all he has done to develop his kicking, speed, and play making skills at the fly half position.

Sam was a 2-time MVP for Tigers Rugby Football Club in 2006 & 2007, and a former Tigers Rugby captain. Sam also a member of the 2005 2A Colorado State Football Championship team as a place kicker and wide receiver for Holy Family High School.
