Tigers Rugby outdoor practice was canceled for February 4th due to snow. Tigers Rugby has a cold weather policy to not play if the temperature is as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit.  The City & County of Broomfield  will also not allow us to play on their artificial turf is there is more than 4 inches of snow on the pitch.

The ninth season of the Tigers Rugby Football Club got off to a fun-filled first week with as many as 27 players a session.  Broomfield County Commons Park is the venue for practices is January and February.  Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:15 pm, and Saturdays at 10:00 am are the start times.  Growing numbers were evident each day, and support from as many as 11 coaches provided expanded learning opportunities for the young Tigers.

Tigers Rugby is actively recruiting 13-18 year old boys.  There is plenty of room for everyone in this club.  Tigers Rugby Football Club begins our 9th campaign, with Arvada, Westminster and Broomfield high school, 8-10th grade players, and  adult teams. The high school age boys rugby club competes in Rugby Colorado (formerly Colorado Youth Rugby), one of the country’s most successful State Based Model Organizations. Adults (Tigers Rugby Alumni) also play under the auspices of the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union, Western RFU, and USA Rugby.

Tigers RFC looks forward to the spring with great enthusiasm. As Rugby enjoys increased popularity in the North Suburban area, Tigers Rugby is enjoying growth for the 9th consecutive year. This one organized club, featuring players from 5 or more schools, promotes a growing local interest and support. The team is well respected and took home league Sportsmanship Awards in 2005, 2006 and 2011. Tigers draw their players from Legacy, Ralston Valley, Standley Lake, and Holy Family High Schools. A yearly match against Regis Jesuit High School is a celebration culminated by the Colorado Catholic HS Boys Rugby Cup, presented to the winner – which in 2011 was our Tigers.  Above all else, having fun is our intention. Our method of teaching sportsmanship, skills and strategy- in a well-controlled environment helps in the presentation of an organized Tigers Rugby game plan.

Nick Samaras, Assistant Head Coach, offers critical training for the historically quick and powerful Tigers Rugby running backs. Players receive instruction and support from 11 assistant coaches. Club founder Paul O’Brian, was the Rugby Colorado Division I Coach of the Year in 2011, and the Division II Coach of the Year in 2005.  He leads the coaching staff of Nick Samaras, Dylan Lewis, Mike & Matt O’Brian, Jim Twiford, Juan Sarti, Jonathan Castillo, Ben Wright, Jake and Jeff Gossman, and Artur Gonzales. Coaches are certified by USA Rugby, the national governing body, to coach high school and youth-aged players, including background checks. Fitness is inherent to our training method, and essential to rugby players. Tigers Rugby Coaches thoroughly enjoy the conditioning and skills demonstrated by their boys after just a few shorts lessons. Though confusing to spectators at first, players adopt the laws of the game rapidly and are quick to grow attached by the world’s second most popular game.

Tigers Rugby strives to exceed expectations of parents and administrators concerned with the welfare and education of young players. The positive aspects of rugby: camaraderie, fitness, discipline, sportsmanship, teamwork and mutual respect, builds self-esteem and character among our athletes. The skills developed, including ball handling, running, vision, tackling, pursuit angles, speed and strength development, punting and place kicking are applicable to other sports.

Tigers’ Board of Directors provides the opportunity for players to experience parliamentary rule in the presentation of By-laws to govern the organization, mentoring in the design of a working constitution, election of officers, and the establishment of a sound mission.

Tigers Rugby Football Club played host to the State Champion Colorado Springs Grizzlies at the invitation of the Apex Parks and Recreation District.  The grand opening of the district’s indoor artificial turf facility on Oak Street in Arvada was a tremendous venue for a remarkable display of rugby skills on December 10th.

Sportsmanship and tradition were on display as two of Colorado’s state semifinalists tried out the pristine turf.  District administrators were seemingly drawn in by the pre-game hoopla including the Grizzlies’ performance of the revered Haka.  The Tigers and Grizzlies sang the national anthem before the first of two touch rugby games on the North Field in the Apex Field House.  Over 100 rugby-curious and faithful supporters were on hand, watching the matches on bleachers and around the 60 by 30 yard arena through glass walls.  High ceilings allowed for displays of kicking to restart and to strategically advance the ball in live play.

Tigers Rugby Alumni Side took on Boulder Rugby RFC’s Division I B side on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Glendales Infinity Park. Though the Tigers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on Bobby Kemp’s extra effort, 5 minutes into the match, Boulder RFC regained the lead on the last play before halftime, 14-7, then took the Tigers over in the second half, with a 26-7 final tally. Mike O’Brian advanced the ball well with his foot and converted the first try. Despite the consistent rucking efforts by the Tigers, and opportunities provided by dropped Boulder passes, the Arvada/Broomfield club could not capitalize late in the match to close the gap.

Tigers Rugby Football Club closed out their pre-season with a 1-1 record, as they prepare for their first USA Rugby Division III league match, which will be played at North Arvada Middle School on September 24th (1:00 PM Kickoff). Old nemesis, new day. East put a hurt on us today, 55-0.   We played every healthy player.  It was a better battle than the score would indicate, but it was hard to prove that to the 150 strong Tigers Nation that showed up to line the Tigers’ sideline.  Among the dignitaries, we were honored have Brad Baeir with us, co-founder of this storied club.  Parents, alumni (Eddie Page, Steve Blevins, Brian Kelly, Justin & Steve Sadler), family and friends waited for a chance to roar.  The little battles we won some were, unfortunately not so evident to the crowd.  Yet, there were a number of highlights, including play by Jimmy Higdon, Rob Nees, Patrick O’Connor, Andrew Hutchinson, Nick Allen, AJ Shannon and Warren Woood.  Andrew Hutchinson and Jeff Madigan each received yellow cards that hamstrug any comeback hopes, but difficulties staying behind the last foot on rucks lost the Tigers’ hard earned field position throughout the first 45 minutes of the match.  A late charge was convincing, and the match started out with a demonstration of incredible Tigers Rugby feats of strength.

Momentum gathered in the Semifinal match will undoubtedly carry over for the 3rd in State match against Regis Jesuit HS on Wednesday.

Kickoff was changed to 5:00 pm.  Warmups are at 4:00 at Infinity Park.

There are many analogies to life in rugby. This game is a raging metaphor. Intensity, fatigue, exhilaration, adrenaline, success, euphoria and revelry have always been what brings young men to this game. Though war is recurrent backdrop, intelligent play becomes the only option as you reach the level of the Rugby Colorado Final Four.

Forever Strong. We are many things, but we are never weak, and we have never been stronger than now. We grew up, and learned through so much adversity – together. I thank you for challenging me to get you to this moment.

Defense win championships. As we play out the season against Regis, counter ruck everything (you pushed East around all day at the breakdown), or get out and set up a balanced line on both the left and right. Set your backline quickly, sit behind the last foot of the ruck in pillars, and prepare to explode onto the poach. You will be naturally in position with support. Loving your brother won’t get any better than the moment you when you jump behind their back line and race with two other Tigers to the try line.

We are the few. There is something significant in the fact that we survived with only 24 players. Losing Mikey  and Jake Boselli was tragic, Nick Martin was unfortunate and Jake Gossman, just unlucky. The young guys like Jamison, Rob Kaniecki, and now Danny Fiorino, we really regret losing. Some of you, however, are performing better than in football season in the fall. We are more than survivors, we are champions.

What I would give to have played at this level of this state’s Rugby competition…. There are no more do-overs, no more second chances. You can never really take Mulligans in life. Quickly (if you will) judge whether what you got from us in 6 months of opportunity was worth the pain. If so, then let’s play – one more big one together.   I wasn’t the best, I was just me. But you – YOU – ARE – the best in this coming match, so don’t dumb it down. We were led today by Rugby Colorado’s Division I Player of the Year, and 14 other Tigers players could have easily been selected for that same honor. You are so good, they want our entire team to try out for Select Side to compete against other regional teams from around the country here in June. They hope to start 4-6 of you. Whenever you do play rugby again, you will improve the team you join.   It’s just what Tigers Rugby players do.
