In order to succeed in college athletics, you must be willing to dedicate a good amount of time into trying to be perfect at everything you do, whether it be in the weight room, the classroom, or the film room.

What are some of the challenges you’ve experienced as a student athlete?
At times it can be very difficult to find the proper balance between leisure, football, and academics, especially in the college environment where one has all the freedom they can imagine.

What have you learned about yourself in Gunnison?
I love the outdoors, fishing, hiking and the like.

If success builds character and failure reveals it, how is your first season with the Mountaineers affecting you?
It’s showed me that you don’t always need to win to appreciate the game. The best part about sports is the relationships you make with your teammates, you don’t need to win to enjoy your relationships.

You’re kind of a techie; tell me how computer skills help you succeed in your daily life as a student athlete.
I make lots of new friends by always fixing their internet.

If you had to do it all over, would you still play rugby?
Without a doubt, rugby was a great experience and showed me how important dedication is to a game.

Some might argue that rugby reflects character, others, that rugby builds character. What is certain, however, is that character builds rugby. Markus is an integral part of Tigers Rugby history with as many years, points, tries and games played as anyone, and represents well, the game of Rugby.

Former Tigers Rugby captain, Mark Harvey plays on at Western State.

July 11, 2009 – For six years, Tigers Rugby Football Club has coached high school aged boys from Holy Family, Broomfield, Pomona and Ralston Valley High Schools. Now, the Broomfield and Arvada rugby club has spawned an adult recreational team, made up of former players and coaches.

The inaugural Alumni Social Side placed fifth in the Denver 7s Rugby Tournament at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Sam Glynn, Quincy Anderson, Eddie Page, Neil Quinlivan, Jimmy Hullett, Max Brady, Lewis Rosenberg, Mike O’Brian, Matt O’Brian and Paul O’Brian came back to beat Queen City RFC’s over-30s side 28-21, and a Benedictine college’s touring side (The Benedictine Monks) 17-15. In early morning games, the Alumni lost to Glendale’s (nationally ranked Division I) A-side 40-0, and Colorado Springs’ (Division II) A-side 41-7.

Quincy Anderson (Colorado School of Mines) got the scoring started against Colorado Springs with a long take up the left sideline.

Sammy Glynn (St Thomas University) went 5-7 on drop goal conversions. Sam was named Man of the Tournament, using pop kicks twice and going weak side off of a ruck for a third try on the day. Three alumni scored their first tries in a long time. Jim Hullett came back to the game with a flair and earned a try. Mike O’Brian (FRCC & CSU) supported a Sam Glynn, pop kick, scoop and pass at contact to Mike for a great try between the posts. Mike later tapped a penalty and passed to his dad, Paul O’Brian (Albany State & SUNY at Buffalo ‘82), who went the distance (5 meters) for his first try of record in at least 11 years.

Those that did not score played critical roles in building the 2-2 record on the day. Eddie Page the (original) Tigers’ scrumhalf gave the backline an extra set of hands. Lewis Rosenberg played well at three different positions. Neil Quinlivan (CSU) was a maniac, stripping balls in tackles to shut down a couple drives. Max Brady (BYU Idaho & CCD) was solid in the backline and in his first scrums, giving Glendale a couple bruises and a goal line stand. Matt O’Brian (CSU) weaved his way for a few 40 meter runs, then set great rucks to change the direction of a number of Queen City and Colorado Springs drives.

On June 27th, the annual Alumni Match was a classic, 79-71 victory for Nick Samaras, Quincy Anderson (Man of the Match), Mike O’Brian, Matt O’Brian, Patrick O’Connor, Marcus Lucero, Max Brady, Luke Stanley and Justin Sadler over the team of Paul O’Bran, Sam Glynn, Jimmy Hullett, Andy Maul, Jesse Peters, Neil Quinlivan, Eddie Page, Jake Gossman, and Lewis Rosenberg. The two hour barn burner was played in stifling heat, but no one wanted to quit until the field permit had expired. The victors erased a 43-41 half time lead.

Travis McKee (Pomona HS) was voted the 2009 Tigers Rugby Most Valuable Player. Pomona Sophomore Nick Allen was honored with the Best Rookie Back, Pomona Senior Donny Haupt the Best Rookie Forward, Holy Family HS Senior, Markus Harvey the Best Forward, and Charles Martinez (Pomona) the Best Back Awards by their teammates and coaches.

In the Tigers Rugby, Inc. Annual General Meeting, convened in Arvada, Paul O’Brian was reelected President, Jeff Gossman was reelected Treasurer, and Jim O’Connor was railroaded into serving as the Tigers Rugby Recording Secretary for the next year.

The club voted to purchase new white short sleeve jerseys, and to sell off the original set of purple jerseys. Cost of the old jerseys was set at $30. Contact us if you are an alumnus, or a current player interested in purchasing one.

The club expressed their appreciation to Tigers Rugby’s sponsors (Accelerate Physical Therapy, Gas & Arc Supply and Coffman & Companies), the captains, players and parents for the a great year, capped by our best finish in Tigers Rugby playoff history.

Tigers Rugby Football Club begins coaching speed and agility with Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists from Arvada’s Accelerate Physical Therapy. PC in December. This is the traditional start to the Spring high school boys rugby season.

Justin Sadler in pursuit.

Justin Sadler – Justin Sadler was a Captain and 3-year player who began his career at second row. In his senior year, Justin was our leading jumper and consistently available in the hugely successful Tigers Rugby lineouts of 2009. Justin was nominated as the Colorado Youth Rugby Player of the Year.

Charles Martinez – For two years, Charles ran the Tigers Rugby attack from the flyhalf position. Charles had an entertaining nature to his game. Power, speed, strength and fine foot for drop kicking offered Tigers fans exciting leadership.

Justin Thunell – Justin is a 3-year starter for Tigers Rugby who comes to us from Ralston Valley High School. Justin played full back for the Tigers and had a roll as a rugby player in filming of the movie, “Forever Strong.” Justin had uncanny vision on the pitch and his fluid running and skillful tackling put the Tigers in a number of scoring situations.

Ryan Torrez – Ryan came to Tigers Rugby as a defensive back on the Pomona Panthers Football team. Ryan provides significant power and speed to the attack from the inside center and the wing positions. Ryan will attend Adams State University on a football scholarship this fall.

Lucas Stanley- “Lukey” came out his junior year from Pomona HS, showing vast determination to become a starter by improving his strength and conditioning elements. After his significant hard work, he led the front row to prove the varsity Tigers RFC’s scrum was not a team to look past, setting the standard for many Tiger’s props to come.

Joshua Carvalho – Josh Carvalho serves as the Tigers Rugby Match Secretary and was the first active player elected to the Board. Josh played hooker and threw in the lineouts. His loose play also provided substantial punch to the Tigers Rugby quarterfinal finish in the State Championship Tournament. Josh came to Tigers Rugby from Pomona Panthers Football team, where he started at center.

Luke Stanley, Mark Harvey and Joe Mack size up the Fort Collins scrum.

Joe Mack – Joe overcame a devastating automobile accident that ended his high school football season. Joe committed to the rugby training and played forward, scrum half and center over his two year Tigers Rugby career. His inspirational play culminated in varsity wins in the late season. Joe Mack’s leadership in the post season promoted Tigers Rugby’s growth with two teams in the State Championship Tournament.

Patrick Sullivan – Patrick played full back and wing, and was willing to play at any time for any team in his career. At tournaments, Patrick played one day for three different clubs and has his own unique passion for the game. Patrick played two years for Tigers Rugby and will be sorely missed for his on and off the field contributions. Patrick attended Brighton High School and drove significant distance to be a part of the Tigers Rugby experience.

Anthony Gaglia – Anthony was a two year starter at wing and backed up the scrum half. Anthony brought an infectious energy that stoked the Pomona HS movement, was cool under the constant pressure and never backed down.

Donny Haupt – Donny was a first year player came conditioned as a finalist for the 189 lb. 5A wrestling title. His dominant play at the tight head prop leading in the front row. His strength and technique turned a number of situations our way, especially against the head (oppomnent put-ins in the scrum).

Cole Tesone – Cole played his senior year at the outside center and wing. With blazing speed and exuberant effort, Cole brought all of his quickness from his previous baseball career to Tigers Rugby.

Joe Giron – Joe joined Tigers RFC as a senior after losing a quarterfinal match in the state wrestling championship tournament. Joe became a pillar of strength at second row, and offeed speed, endurance and power in defensive and attack phases of play.

Nathan Dorney – Nathan started this year with us playing rugby with friends from Ralston Valley High School. Nathan has played flanker and prop, providing Tigers with stability in the scrum and offered significant contribution to the loose play in all Tigers Rugby attack and defensive phases.

Matt Able – Matt enjoyed his first year with Tigers Rugby, coming to us as a senior from Brighton High School, where he played outside linebacker for the football team. Matt played wing and occasionally dabbled in the role of scrum half. His speed and power offered a significant threat from the edge of the Tigers Rugby attack.

RJ Gelinski – RJ had a great time playing with us when he was available. A friend of a number of the Pomona HS players, RJ got a few runs at wing and center. We remember his speed and hands. Otherwise , we hope to see him more in the alumni matches of the future. “Once a Tiger, Always a Tiger”, as Coach Medhurst used to say.

Tigers Rugby met division foe Northside Vikings in an afternoon of terrific rugby.

The Tigers struck first when Pomona High School Sophomore Nick Allen broke a long run for a try. Fellow Pomona student, Charles Martinez’ successful drop kick gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead.

With the wind at their backs, Senior Captain Travis McKee popped the ball up to the Vikings’ goal posts, covered his own kick and fed the ball to Charles Martinez ,who scored a tumbling, head over heels, try.

Not to be disuaded, the Vikings came roaring back with a try of their own for a 12-7 halftime score.

The first score of the second half came after another long run. This time by Justin Thunell, who returned a grub kick up the sideline, set the ruck, and allowed Senior Captain Markus Harvey to rumble in for the try.

The Vikings scored a quick follow up try of their own to make the score 17-12.

As is their custom, the Vikings selected an opponent’s Man of The Match. This years recipient is Travis McKee for his outstanding 8-Man play.

This superbly contested Glendale match at Jacobs Park ended in a donnybrook. Tigers, surprisingly, put more players in the Sin Bin. Tigers Rugby Football took great effort to find themselves in scoring position repeatedly, but in the end (both literally and metaphorically) knocked it forward into the try zone (the one with the tree in it). Despite controlling territory for three quarters of the match, a second phase pod break by the Glendale Raptor’s outside center settled this one in the 1st half as the Tigers played 14 on 13.

Tigers hope to rebound after dropping to 2-2 in league play this Saturday as a makeup league match against ThunderRidge at 3PM on Championship Field in Broomfield. If this is not logistically possible , there will be 10 AM practice on Saturday, April 11th at Broadlands.
