Rugby 7s is a variation of of the game that normally is played with 15 players on each team. Playing with 7 players at a time opens up the game considerably, and is an exciting addition to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad.

Tigers Rugby Football Club competed in the 43rd annual Dever 7s tournament’s U-19 and Men’ s Social brackets on July 24th at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Amassing a 1-4 record on the day, Tiger Rugby won their last match and walked off happy. Players were grateful for local sponsors’ contribution of the admission fees, and reveled in another chance to meet up and play a little rugby on a wonderful summer Saturday.

The Denver 7s tournament was played for the 43rd year at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.The Tigers relented 180 points on the day to 20 scored, indicating the level of competition in thebrackets for this event was a bit over the Tigers’ heads, but, with the makeup of each team being a bunch of forwards, it was reminiscent of the “Props ‘R Us” entries of the late 1980s, when this tournament was played in Washington Park over the Memorial Day weekend.

Jake Boselli started the scoring for the Tigers U-19 side, then added a retalliatory yellow card acccompanied by 10 minutes in the Sin Bin, andstill had time to demonstrate some of his many purported acrobatic skills on the warm summer day. Jake Gossman and Patrick O’Connnor missed drop kick conversions, and freshman, Michael Fagundo closed the Tigers Rugby scoring on the day with a 15 meter weak side take. After dropping big losses to Colorado Springs and Aurora Saracens, Tigers Rugby U-19 side knocked off the Grand Junction U-19 side by a score of 15-0. Ex-Tiger, now Boulder winger, Garrett Miller rejoined his old friend, Patrick O’Connor and Tigers Andrew Hutchinson of Standley Lake HS, Charlie Ellwood, Daniel Sargeant, Boselli, Gossman, and Fagundo. Boulder Rugby’s also contributed Zach Savage, whoscored two tries through the day from the Fly half position, center and wing position.

Travis McKee, Sam Glynn, Dylan Lewis, Luke Stanley, Donny Haupt, Josh Carvalho, Neil Quinlivan and Eddie Page were the Tigers mainstays on hand. The O’Brian family (Mike Matt and Paul ) formed a starting minority in the early match against the Olympic Club’s B side, hailing from the San Fransisco Bay area. The Alumni side was also knocked off by Boulder RFC to end their day. Tigers Rugby had a chance to introduce the game to 3 new players throughout the day, improving the opportunities to grow the club and share the rugby experience. Max Cramer, a South African, his friend Chris and a dude named Webster got a chance to put on the boots and get their feet wet with us.

TigersRugby has informal commitments for 4 Alumni side matches in the fall. If you are over or under 19 years old, we have a program for you. Go to www.TigersRugby.com or call (303) 506-8110 to speak to Coach Paul O’Brian.

Tigers Rugby is actively recruiting 13-18 year old boys. Size, strength and speed are abundant in the rugby recruits seen since practice began in December for the spring season, but there is plenty of room for everyone in this club. Tigers Rugby Football Club begins our 7th campaign, with Arvada, Westminster and Broomfield high school (U-19 and U-16) players, and an adult team. The high school age boys rugby club competes in Colorado Youth Rugby, one of the country’s most successful State Based Model Organizations. Adults (U-23 & Alumni Social Side) also play under the auspices of the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union, Western RFU, and USA Rugby.

We anticipate the forthcoming season as a Colorado Youth Rugby Division I team with veterans Patrick O’Connor, Albert Whitemore, Jake Gossman, Alec Walters, Walker Prieb, Jake Boselli, Oliver Smith, Sam Quinn and Rob Nees from Holy Family HS. From Pomona HS, Warren Wood, Daijon Tyler and Nick Allen also return to the Tigers backline support. Ralston Valley HS returns Luke & Ryan Rockwood, Mitchell and Braden Thunell; and Daniel Sargeant brings his skills back from Early College HS. In preseason workouts, the Tigers have seen 34 players report already. New players from Arvada and Broomfield that have been on hand to learn the fastest growing sport in the USA, include Matt McLean, Charlie Elwood, Michael Figundo, Dany Fiorino, Tyler Hsin, Robert Kaniecki, Eric & Esau Robles, Marcus Pattilugam, Anthony Puglise and King Medlin. Jimmy Higden, AJ Shannon, Christian Wallis, and Matt Dominguez-Robinson just recently joined us from Pomona, as did Peter Loving from Ralston Valley. Early College HS’s Thomas Guilinger, and Standley Lake students Andrew Hutchinson and Zach Underwood played their first matches this week.

Tigers RFC looks forward to the spring with greatenthusiasm. As Rugby enjoys increased popularity in the North Suburban area, Tigers Rugby is enjoying growth for the 7th consecutive year. This one organized club, featuring players from5 or more schools, promotes a growing local interest and support. The team is well respected and took home league Sportsmanship Awards in 2005 and 2006. Tigers draw their players from Pomona, Ralston Valley, Early College, Standley Lake,and extensively from Holy Family High School. A yearly match against Regis Jesuit High School is a celebration culminated by the Colorado Catholic HS Boys Rugby Cup, presented to the winner. Close associations with Coach Rich Duncan of neighboring Northside Rugby Club have fostered opportunities for growth in the North Denver Metro area. Joint practices and preseason scrimmages provides a basis of order and respect for the laws of the game amongst all contestants. Above all else,having fun is our intention. Our method of teaching sportsmanship, skill and strategyin a well-controlled environment helps in the presentation of an organized Tigers Rugby game plan.

Nick Samaras, Assistant Head Coach, offers critical training for the historically quick and powerful Tigers Rugby running backs. Players receive instruction and support from 9 coaches. Club founder Paul O’Brian, the Colorado Youth Rugby Dvision II Coach of the Year in 2005, leads the coaching staff of Dylan Lewis, Mike & Matt O’Brian, Jim Twiford, Pat Quinlan, Martin Smith, and Jeff Gossman. Coaches are certified by USA Rugby, the national governing body, to coach high school and youth-aged players, including background checks. Fitness is inherent toour training method, and essential torugby players. Tigers Rugby Coaches thoroughly enjoy the conditioning and skills demonstrated by their boys after just a few shorts lessons. Though confusing to spectators at first, players adopt the laws of the game rapidly and are quick to grow attached by the world’s second most popular game.

In hope that CHSAA will one day sanction rugby, Tigers Rugby strives to exceed expectations of parents and administrators concerned with the welfare and education of young players. The positive aspects of rugby: camaraderie, fitness, discipline, sportsmanship, teamwork and mutual respect, builds self-esteem and character among our athletes. The skills developed, including ball handling, running, vision, tackling, pursuit angles, speed and strength development, punting and place kicking are applicable to other sports. Most of our athletes participate at theencouragement of their high school football coaches.

Two Arvada businessmen, Paul O’Brian, of Accelerate Physical Therapy and Pat Quinlan of Coffman & Companies Group played as team mates in the 1980s for Queen City RFC of Denver. Coffman & Companies Group auctioned off an HVAC service van, and proceeds were donated to the club . Pat prefers his donation to benefit any boys who cannot afford the $130 registration fee. Applications are reviewed by Attorney Dylan Lewis,who contributes his time for the success of Tigers Rugby Football Club,andleads the non profit Colorado corporation with much needed guidance. Jim O’Connor of sponsors, Gas & Arc Supply, also serves on the Tigers’ Board of Directors, which provides the opportunity for players to experience parliamentary rule in the presentation of By-laws to govern the organization, mentoring in the design of a working constitution, election of officers, and establishment of a sound mission. Tigers Rugby introduced this web site with assistance from parent and web master Steve Sadler. Here you will find helpful information about practice and matches to be played from February 24th through May, 2010.

To play rugby this spring, call Coach O’Brian at (303) 506-8110

In order to succeed in college athletics, you must be willing to dedicate a good amount of time into trying to be perfect at everything you do, whether it be in the weight room, the classroom, or the film room.

What are some of the challenges you’ve experienced as a student athlete?
At times it can be very difficult to find the proper balance between leisure, football, and academics, especially in the college environment where one has all the freedom they can imagine.

What have you learned about yourself in Gunnison?
I love the outdoors, fishing, hiking and the like.

If success builds character and failure reveals it, how is your first season with the Mountaineers affecting you?
It’s showed me that you don’t always need to win to appreciate the game. The best part about sports is the relationships you make with your teammates, you don’t need to win to enjoy your relationships.

You’re kind of a techie; tell me how computer skills help you succeed in your daily life as a student athlete.
I make lots of new friends by always fixing their internet.

If you had to do it all over, would you still play rugby?
Without a doubt, rugby was a great experience and showed me how important dedication is to a game.

Some might argue that rugby reflects character, others, that rugby builds character. What is certain, however, is that character builds rugby. Markus is an integral part of Tigers Rugby history with as many years, points, tries and games played as anyone, and represents well, the game of Rugby.

July 11, 2009 – For six years, Tigers Rugby Football Club has coached high school aged boys from Holy Family, Broomfield, Pomona and Ralston Valley High Schools. Now, the Broomfield and Arvada rugby club has spawned an adult recreational team, made up of former players and coaches.

The inaugural Alumni Social Side placed fifth in the Denver 7s Rugby Tournament at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Sam Glynn, Quincy Anderson, Eddie Page, Neil Quinlivan, Jimmy Hullett, Max Brady, Lewis Rosenberg, Mike O’Brian, Matt O’Brian and Paul O’Brian came back to beat Queen City RFC’s over-30s side 28-21, and a Benedictine college’s touring side (The Benedictine Monks) 17-15. In early morning games, the Alumni lost to Glendale’s (nationally ranked Division I) A-side 40-0, and Colorado Springs’ (Division II) A-side 41-7.

Quincy Anderson (Colorado School of Mines) got the scoring started against Colorado Springs with a long take up the left sideline.

Sammy Glynn (St Thomas University) went 5-7 on drop goal conversions. Sam was named Man of the Tournament, using pop kicks twice and going weak side off of a ruck for a third try on the day. Three alumni scored their first tries in a long time. Jim Hullett came back to the game with a flair and earned a try. Mike O’Brian (FRCC & CSU) supported a Sam Glynn, pop kick, scoop and pass at contact to Mike for a great try between the posts. Mike later tapped a penalty and passed to his dad, Paul O’Brian (Albany State & SUNY at Buffalo ‘82), who went the distance (5 meters) for his first try of record in at least 11 years.

Those that did not score played critical roles in building the 2-2 record on the day. Eddie Page the (original) Tigers’ scrumhalf gave the backline an extra set of hands. Lewis Rosenberg played well at three different positions. Neil Quinlivan (CSU) was a maniac, stripping balls in tackles to shut down a couple drives. Max Brady (BYU Idaho & CCD) was solid in the backline and in his first scrums, giving Glendale a couple bruises and a goal line stand. Matt O’Brian (CSU) weaved his way for a few 40 meter runs, then set great rucks to change the direction of a number of Queen City and Colorado Springs drives.

On June 27th, the annual Alumni Match was a classic, 79-71 victory for Nick Samaras, Quincy Anderson (Man of the Match), Mike O’Brian, Matt O’Brian, Patrick O’Connor, Marcus Lucero, Max Brady, Luke Stanley and Justin Sadler over the team of Paul O’Bran, Sam Glynn, Jimmy Hullett, Andy Maul, Jesse Peters, Neil Quinlivan, Eddie Page, Jake Gossman, and Lewis Rosenberg. The two hour barn burner was played in stifling heat, but no one wanted to quit until the field permit had expired. The victors erased a 43-41 half time lead.

Travis McKee (Pomona HS) was voted the 2009 Tigers Rugby Most Valuable Player. Pomona Sophomore Nick Allen was honored with the Best Rookie Back, Pomona Senior Donny Haupt the Best Rookie Forward, Holy Family HS Senior, Markus Harvey the Best Forward, and Charles Martinez (Pomona) the Best Back Awards by their teammates and coaches.

In the Tigers Rugby, Inc. Annual General Meeting, convened in Arvada, Paul O’Brian was reelected President, Jeff Gossman was reelected Treasurer, and Jim O’Connor was railroaded into serving as the Tigers Rugby Recording Secretary for the next year.

The club voted to purchase new white short sleeve jerseys, and to sell off the original set of purple jerseys. Cost of the old jerseys was set at $30. Contact us if you are an alumnus, or a current player interested in purchasing one.

The club expressed their appreciation to Tigers Rugby’s sponsors (Accelerate Physical Therapy, Gas & Arc Supply and Coffman & Companies), the captains, players and parents for the a great year, capped by our best finish in Tigers Rugby playoff history.

Tigers Rugby Football Club begins coaching speed and agility with Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists from Arvada’s Accelerate Physical Therapy. PC in December. This is the traditional start to the Spring high school boys rugby season.
If we are mark’d to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honour.
God’s will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.
By Jove, I am not covetous for gold,
Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost;
It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires.
But if it be a sin to covet honour,
I am the most offending soul alive.
No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England.
God’s peace! I would not lose so great an honour
As one man more methinks would share from me
For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made,
And crowns for convoy put into his purse;
We would not die in that man’s company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is call’d the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam’d,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say “To-morrow is Saint Crispian.”
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say “These wounds I had on Crispian’s day.”
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he’ll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb’red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.
