Mike G. Gabriel Football Stadium at Holy Family High School in Broomfield will be the site of the 2008 Colorado Youth Rugby Girls State Championship Matches. On November 1st, from 12:30-5 pm, Tigers Rugby Football Club will host the Championship and Consolation matches. In addition, an All Star format for the rest of the league will open the slate.

Holy Family HS Athletic Director, Mr. Ben Peterson had graciously granted Tigers Rugby approval for the proposal on September 8th, while the CYR Executive Committee deliberated three proposals. By majority vote on September 17th, the Board of Directors accepted a proposal by Tigers Rugby head coach Paul O’Brian, beating out Infinity Park in Glendale, and Shea Stadium in Littleton. Tigers Rugby Football Club and their sponsors are excited to bring this event to the Broomfield area. Though Tigers Rugby does not coach a girls team, we are proud to present this major championship event. Girls rugby is expected to become a Colorado High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) sanctioned sport in 2010. Mike G. Gabriel Football Stadium was also the site of the Colorado Youth Rugby All Star matches and Select Side try-outs in May 2006.

A beautifully rehabilitated grass pitch at Broadlands Park was the site of the second annual Tigers Rugby Alumni Match. The freshly cut and lined pitch was layed out by the O’Brians and O’Connors for the 10:00 am kick-off. The Annual General Meeting followed with awards and elections.

A 22-22 half time score held up after Sammy Glynn missed a conversion as time ran out. The second half was an epic battle with Andy Maul, Marcus and Alejandro Lucero and Josh Carvalho leading the 2008 Tiger RFC U-19 side against their coaches and alumni. Pat Quinlan scored his first try of the 21st century to put the veterans up for good. The seasoned left wing took a pass on the weak side, and ran it to the center of the posts uncontested. A late charge by the 2008 Tigers just about put the match into overtime, but for an unlucky knocked-on pass.

On Saturday, May 3rd, Tigers Rugby Football Club faced 12th ranked Ft. Collins Youth Rugby in the Colorado Youth Rugby’s State Championship Tournament at Dick’s Sporting Goods Complex.

The Tigers took an early lead on a try by Tony Costello of Pomona High School. The drop kick goal by Charles Martinez made the score 7 to 0. Fort Collins answered with a penalty goal to put the halftime tally at 7-3.

A spirited and motivated Ft. Collins team, that has only beaten the Tigers once in their history, controlled the second half with a kicking game that confused the Tigers backfield in the swirling wind. Late in the second half, Fort Collins’ kicking game intensely pressured the injured Tigers fullback to muff the ball at the right goal post. A resultant try, touched down by the well-covered attack of the Fort Collins wing, put the Tigers’ division rival ahead for good. By upsetting the 5th ranked North Division champions and their supporters, Ft. Collins advanced to the Championship bracket. Final score: Fort Collins 10, Tigers Rugby 7.

With the loss, Tigers Rugby failed to qualify for the championship bracket for the fifth year in a row and moved to the Plate Division. Tigers Rugby had an excellent opportunity to return to the finals and avenge their loss to Chaparral last year. Their opponent, the Glendale Raptor’s U-19 team, was just as inspired to play, hoping to avenge the early season loss to the Tigers at Championship Field in Broomfield, CO.

The Glendale club was physically aggressive early causing a yellow card to their eight man. Ten minutes in the “sin bin” for the Raptor’s player was enough for the Tigers Quincy Anderson to “tap and go” for a 5-meter try. Charles Martinez dropped kick for the conversion to put the Tigers ahead, 7-0. Glendale answered with the try and missed the conversion kick, and the score remained 7-5. Tigers came back strongly in spite of confrontational play and occasional discipline issues on both sides of the field. The Tigers took a 14 to five lead before a Glendale penalty goal brought the score to 14-8. A s tempers flared the Glendale club was charged with unsportsmanlike penalty prompting a second yellow card. Unfortunately Josh Carvahlo of Pomona High School retaliated and took his own yellow card and 10 minutes in the Sin Bin. In the ensuing series of skirmishes, Ryan Torrez also Pomona high school was cited for a shoulder charge and the Tigers found themselves a man down at 14 on 13 with 2 men in the Sin Bin. Glendale took the advantage and eventually scored the last second try and the conversion to go ahead 15 to 14 with ten seconds remaining. The Tigers team was slow to approach the kick off and the referee blew whistle indicating full time, final score Glendale 15, Tigers 14.

Tigers Rugby Football Club will host one more intersquad match at Broomfield County Commons Park and celebrate this amazing rebuilding season with an awards banquet. Tigers finish their season at 5-4 in league play (including the State Championship tournament), and 20-14-2 overall. The Tigers entered the State Championship Tournament rated fifth in the state. Tigers Rugby experienced an extraordinary season despite close losses in the playoff rounds this season. The progression of team as a whole, and the fact that only three seniors will graduate this year, gives great promise for next year.

The State semifinals will be held next week at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. In the Championship Bracket, Aurora Saracens, Colorado Springs, Regis Jesuit and Denver East will face off.

Tigers Rugby Football Club drew a bye in league play for week seven. On Monday, April 21, Tigers U-16 players teamed again with Cherry Creek Rugby to win three straight matches at the Freshmen/Sophomore Festival #4 on Boulder’s pristine Pleasant View Park Rugby Stadium. Tigers/Cherry Creek won in three shutouts over SWARM 45-0; Regis Jesuit 12-0; and PAC (Platte Canyon & Conifer HS) by a score of 25-0. The highlight of the rugby spectacle was perhaps a 22 meter drop kick by Joseph Gonzales (Centaurus HS), in the middle of a 50 meter break away, for a 3 point drop goal.

After a great practice on Wednesday, most of the team was committed to prom or college trips on Saturday.

Tigers Rugby hosted the 2nd Annual Broomfield Rugby Festival at Championship Field in Broomfield County Commons Park. The sparse crowd watched a high scoring affair between the evenly match freshmen and sophomores sides representing 10 schools from 3 Colorado Youth Rugby clubs. The Purple and White teams tied 75- 75 after three periods and a drop kicking tie breaker failed to produce a winner. Tigers Rugby will play the final league match on Monday against SWARM at Mossbrucker Park in Littleton. Kickoff is at 5:00 PM. There will be a B side match immediately following the A-side match. The Colorado Youth Rugby State Championship Tournament begins on Saturday, May 3rd at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
